Social Media Content
What to Post on Your Page
The goal is creating a social media channel that is engaging and has a large reach within the UC Davis community. Growing social media channels is one of the best ways ASUCD can reach students in need of our support. This can be accomplished by posting regularly (at least once a week) so the algorithm continues to promote your content, as well as posting content that is engaging and relevant for your followers.
When posting content on social media, you are representing ASUCD and UC Davis as a whole. This means we must follow the UC Davis Policy and Procedure Manual (PPM) section 310-40, including the Editorial Style Guide and the permitted uses of the University name as outlined in PPM 310-65, when creatin online content. Additionally, the Social Media Guidelines for the UC Davis Community, Best Practices for Social Media Communicators, and the UC Davis Brand Communication Guidelines should also be followed when creating online content.
Post content that your community wants to engage with. This can include ASUCD news and announcements, upcoming events, celebrations, behind the scenes of your work, and more! Try to keep your content fresh and exciting.
Keep your social media posts short and sweet. Your social media content should be used to build awareness within the community. Social media is not used to teach your followers every detail about your organization! Once a student is aware of your content, they should visit your website (which should always be linked in your post or bio) where they can find all the details. Avoid posting flyers packed with information. Instead, post a photo that highlights the important details and encourages the reader to dive deeper.
Collaborate with other units whenever possible. Collaborating with units accomplishes 2 main goals:
- It increases your reach. By posting with another unit, you can now reach a much larger audience.
- It supports the growth of ASUCD. Collaborating with other ASUCD pages gives them an opportunity to reach a new audience and possibly gain some new followers. It also reminds students that ASUCD is a large community working together to serve students.
Additionally, please follow other ASUCD social media pages and actively engage with their content. This not only supports your fellow friends at ASUCD, but the algorithm will encourage their followers to follow your page, and vice versa.
What NOT to Post on Your Page
Do not share private information such as confidential/proprietary information about UC Davis, its employees, students, affiliates, vendors or suppliers. Examples include confidential student or employee information, strategies, legal issues, patents awaiting approval or research that hasn't been published. This also includes personal contact information for anyone without their consent.
Additionally, ASUCD entities represent a unified association dedicated to serving the student body. Public social media channels are not appropriate venues for airing grievances, disputes, or disagreements with other ASUCD units, committees, commissions, or policies. Any inter-organizational conflicts or policy disagreements must be addressed through established internal communication channels, the ASUCD Senate, or relevant mediation bodies. Units must refrain from using official social media accounts to criticize, call out, or publicly debate other ASUCD entities.
Do not post content that is inaccessible to people with disabilities. All digital content must meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards and must comply with University of California Policy IMT-1300: Information Technology Accessibility. Any content identified as failing to meet these accessibility standards must be edited to comply immediately. Any inaccessible post published on or after April 24, 2026 must be deleted. For specific guidance on how to make your posts accessible, refer to the UC Davis Accessibility website.
Be cautious with endorsements. It's fine to share a project or collaboration, but it is not OK to post to imply, either directly or indirectly, the University’s endorsement, support, favor, association with, or opposition to an organization, product, or service without the permission of the University (see PPM 310-65 and California Education Code section 92000). Additionally, the University is prohibited from directly or indirectly participating in political campaign activities, including supporting or opposing candidates for elective public office (ie, electioneering) as well as ballot measures (see University of California Policies Applying to Campus Activities, Organizations and Students (PACAOS) section 66.00). It's part of being a public entity that we don't use our channels to favor a business, a product or a political candidate. Simply liking someone's tweet, for example, could be interpreted as an endorsement.
Personal opinions belong on personal pages. All accounts associated with ASUCD are public and they represent a large organization made up of diverse perspectives. Make sure your social media content allows for discussion to occur on all sides. You are representing a group of likely very different people. Personal opinions should be shared outside of social media channels officially representing ASUCD and UC Davis.
Exceptions for News and Advocacy:
The Office of the President (@ucdpresident), the Executive Office (@asucd.exec), and the ASUCD Senate (@asucdsenate) accounts are permitted to post content regarding advocacy, legislative stances, and public issues, subject to the conditions required by PACAOS 63.00, as it pertains to their duty to represent the student body’s interests. These three accounts remain subject to university-wide policies regarding ballot measures or candidate endorsements.
All accounts operating under these exceptions must include a permanent disclaimer in their social media bio or "About" section. This disclaimer must state: [Unit/Entity Name] is a student-run [news/advocacy] organization. The statements on this page represent the views of [Unit/Entity Name] and do not necessarily represent the views of ASUCD, or the University of California, or UC Davis or its Chancellor.
Additionally, any third-party advocacy content or promotional partnerships shared by these accounts must include this disclaimer in the post caption.
Student-run media units (KDVS and The CA Aggie) must adhere to both ASUCD Social Media Guidelines and Media Board Guidelines. Content published by student-run media units is subject to review by Media Board.
